What it means to be Northern Soul

What it means to be Northern Soul I have conducted some further research into northern soul, though a lot of it was covered in lectures I have just added a few bits on from lectures and my initial research, about what it means to be northern soul and what came with it, including the friendships, styles and memories. Below are a few bullet pointed extracts from articles that I think show what northern soul was, and is still. I took inspiration from each of the articles these were from in helps with guiding my design making and reasoning through the brief. I have tried to focus my research on quotes and articles that have some link to out concept as I think this helps support our reasoning for choosing the concept and also gives a more experienced perspective of what the concept means. These are from Paul Mason's article written about his experience in the northern soul scene for Vice. "Poor man's speed; coming of age in Wigan's Anarchic northern Soul Scene."...

Drugs in the scene

Drugs in the scene  The inclusion of drugs is explained more in my own words throughout the project in other posts these are just a few sources I found talking about it. Links for these among with other articles I used for research are on a separate  post. A few of my own notes and quotes from an article titled 'The Clubs of Northern Soul' published by Mixmag explaining the place drugs had in the northern soul scene and why they were a big part.  Blue - Drug related Northern Soul was the birth of the crate-digger, the start of modern clubbing as we know it and a fully-formed drug subculture some 20 years before ecstasy arrived in the UK. “What I noticed was that people who came from the north were not buying what was subsequently called funk,” (David Godin, Soul writer). The sound was uptempo and mainly based on the stomping beat personified by the Four Tops’ ‘Can’t Help Myself’ and other Motown productions. This sound was largely fuelled by inc...

Project Management

Project Management This was the first group project we have done this year, considering this I think we managed our time and work really well.  At the start of the project once deciding on the concept fully we were really quick at organising our shoots and models. We organised bringing the band up from Nottingham and managed to research and plan a shoot in the Peak District within the first week. The second shoot took a bit longer to organise as we had to figure out hiring the location in city hall, as mention in my development post we had a lot of backwards and forwards emailing with the enquiries office and even had to go in to city hall at one point to chase it up, this didn't take too long as we were able to conduct the second shoot only a week after the first. Doing this created new contacts for us both and helped us gain experience in dealing with clients.  During the project the work load was shared out fairly and we both took on as much...

Things the North is famous for

Things the North is famous for I have added a bit of research into what the north is famous for, as this project was all about showing the greatness of Sheffield through northern soul, I thought it fitting to show some other reasons the north gets recognition. Yorkshire Dales/ Peak district Known as God's own country the north, specifically Yorkshire, is know for its amazing countrysides, a feature that makes anyone proud to be from Yorkshire. A place of escape for those that enjoy walking r those that just enjoy experiencing nature at its fullest. Hadrian's Wall The famous roman remains of a wall that ran from coast of the north of England. Now a national heritage site  Stainless steel  Sheffield-born Harry Brearley made his name as a metallurgist when he discovered stainless steel in 1913 whilst working at Firth Brown’s research laboratory. Brearley was the first to realise that adding chromium to molten iron produced a metal that did not rust, gi...

'Northern Soul' A film review

'Northern Soul' A film review Notes on the 2014 film 'Northern Soul' directed by Elaine Constantine I watched the film in its entirety and found that it was a great research file for the lifestyle of a northern soulie. I took a lot of styling inspiration form the styling in the film, from the research I have done the styling is so spot on to how soulies dressed. I used the characters in the film as inspiration when picking models  and choosing clothes out at Mooch. The film is like a time capsule, I could do all the article research I wanted but that won't give me a proper feel of the what it truly means tone northern soul, this film filed that gap. It brought all the research I had come across to life in an amazing way, I was able to see all the garments I had researched about in actuality, and all the research I had done about the music and the bonds it creates was portrayed amazingly through main charact...

Authentic Northern Soul Promotion

Image
Authentic Northern Soul Promotion  These are a few examples I found of actual northern soul promotional pieces. I am going to take small bits of inspiration from these however I would like to create my own style of promotion for the exhibition rather than copying northern soul graphic design. I just thought I woul dhow some of the ones I have looked at as a way to show the difference between authentic promotion and my promotion pieces. These have much more retro and vintage look to them whereas my pieces look a lot more modern. I feel the style i chose for min fits with the images I have take, if I had taken images with more of a vintage aesthetic to them I would have considered this style more but as my images are very clear I think adding all this kind of retro styling wouldn't have fit with the aesthetic of the rest of my work. All of these examples have quite different design aspects to them making me think there was no strict design style for soul.   ...

The Concept of Northern Soul- Lecture

The Concept of Northern Soul- Lecture These are just a few notes from the lecture from Rob, in which he went through the entire history of northern soul, this lecture was so helpful in giving me an idea about what northern soul meant and what consisted of being part of it. This gave me the ideas about styling, social life, and lifestyle in general of how northern soul came about and how it continued on. I referred back to this presentation a lot during this brief for inspiration and to point me in the right direction for northern soul.  A music and dance movement that emerged in northern England in late 1960s from the British Mod scene. Based on the black American Soul Music especially from mid-late 1960s. Music with a heavy beat and fast tempo. A lot of Northern Soulies wore Fred Perry. Mod is a subculture which began in London 1958, influencing trends throughout at least 20 different countries. The original Mod scene was associated...

Mods and Rockers

Mods and Rockers Research   It was well known at the time of northern soul that mods and rockers had a strong rivalry. Northern soul was known to be a small clique that started from a mix of both of these, turning into its own scene pretty quickly. Below is a summary of a BBC article titled 'Mods v Rockers; Two tribes go to war' Two tribes at war I have taken some quotes from the article and highlighted aspects of importance, to do with the social impacts the rivalry had on the two scenes and also the impact on society, and to do with the fashion differences and similarities of the two scenes. My own words on the article are at the end of the post. Yellow - General/ social problems Blue - Fashion                May 1964, the youth of Britain went mad . If you believed the newspapers , that is, who went with screaming headlines like ‘ Battle of Brighton’ , and ‘ Wild Ones 'Beat Up' Margate’.  Ed...
